There are various factors which affects the speed of a web page. These factors include image size, number of HTTP request, css and html size. When a user requests for a website page, it generates a HTTP request to load the webpage. Those HTTP requests will delay the response time of your site, and if you are loading dozens of objects this delay can add up to several seconds. So you can try to reduce number of objects on the website. If possible you can also combine 2 or more objects into a single one. We can try combining adjacent images, CSS or JS files.

In this post, We will see how to speedup a website fast by reducing HTTP request.

Combine images

In some page, there may be few images placed together. We can try to combine these images into one. Now, the page will request for a single image which make website few miliseconds faster. We can also try various image optimization tools to compress the size of the image without affecting the quality. WordPress users can use WP Smush.it plugin to optimize images.

Combine CSS stylesheets

If you have multiple CSS stylesheets, then you will use following markup to include all stylesheets in the page

<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”css/style1.css” />
<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”css/style2.css” />
<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”css/style3.css” />

If possible, you can combine all CSS styles in one file and then use it as

<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”css/style.css” />

Do not forget to minify the css files to reduce the size and improve the performance.

Combine JavaScripts Files

As we have combine CSS files, we can also combine JavaScript files into one. This will also reduce number of HTTP request. And this time too, do not forget to minify the js.

These are the main ways to reduce number of http request. You can also use other things to speedup your website. You can try Cloudflare, MaxCDN or other CDN service. Try Gzip and other compression tricks to compress CSS and Javascript files.

I personally use Cloudflare free CDN service to improve the performance and it really works. I am using Cloudflare for more than 3 years without any issue. And it automatically optimize css and js files. It also protect my websites from known threats and spams. You should try it once.
